Proper maintenance and handling of bearings are essential, directly affecting their longevity and performance. For bearings, corrosion is an often undetected and natural enemy. Even though stainless and chrome steel bearings are designed to be corrosion-resistant, they aren’t immune to rusting. Over time, metal components tend to rust and corrode during storage when it comes in contact with water and air, exceptionally more rapid and severe in a humid climate. Likewise, if bearings are exposed to moisture, corrosion will occur, drastically reducing their lifespan. Moreover, when handling bearings, ensure you wear gloves. Bearings should never be taken with bare hands as sweat on your hands, water, or other contaminants can cause corrosion.

  • How:

    1. 1. Exposing bearing to corrosive fluids or atmospheres.
    2. 2. Condensation on or in the bearing, when the temperature changes drastically during storage or working conditions.
  • Corrosion on bearing raceway and rolling elements surface:

  • Countermeasures:

    1. 1. Divert corrosive fluids or atmospheres away from bearing parts.
    2. 2. Avoid high temperature and humidity during storage and working conditions.
    3. 3. Improve sealing on mechanical to prevent water invasion.
